Pontiac Firebird Resto Mod
About my car
My 1968 Firebird is a custom Resto-Mod that I built, not bought or hired.
She was born as a 350HO 4-speed, when I got her there was a 1969 GTO 400 and the 400 hood.
There was a Camaro 12 bolt rear end as a bonus.
Since the original power train was gone, Resto-Mod is the way of the future.
I started with the power train and suspension first.
I picked up a 2005 LQ4 6.0L engine from a Yukon Denali, completely rebuilt it putting flat top Cadillac pistons, 64cc aluminum heads (10:9:1) from a 2002 ZO6 along with the LS6 intake.
Large Warburo 400lpm fuel pump in tank, 43lb injectors, Competition Cam. Hooker headers, 3" stainless steel exhaust, Holley motor mounts and Holley oil pan.
It dynos at 489whp and 448wtq and gets an amazing 18mpg city and 23mpg highway.
I custom built the wiring harness out of the donor truck.
The transmission is a Tremc tko-600 with upgraded carbon synchros, custom bellhousing to accommodate a 12" McLeod clutch. Still using the factory Z-bar.
The rear end is 12 bolt that had been completely chrome plated.
Tru-Trac posi with 3:42 gears and 30 spline c-clip axles.
The suspension has the factory 5 multi leaf in the rear with Competition Engineering traction bars and 1" sway bar.
The frame has been beefed up with BRE subframe connectors.
The front suspension is the CPP upper, lower control arms with the Viking adjustable coil overs on the front and dual adjustable Viking shocks on all 4 corners.
Larger 1-1/4" front sway bar. All mounts are the energy poly urethane bushings.
I put 4 wheel disc brakes with, CPP master cylinder and hydro-boost for maximum stopping. Safety first.
American Racing torque thrust aluminum rims 8" x 17" front and 9.5" rears. Sporting Toyo proxies 235x40x17 front 265x40x17 rears
The paint is found on the 2015 Jaguars as an upgrade and they call it Ultimate Black.
The power seats are from a 2005 GTO, rear bucket seats were custom fabricated to fit, the front seats fit perfectly.
Then I had them recovered in the matching Madrid grain leather that I ordered from Katskin.
