Leaf Spring U-bolts

Ok, so about 2 months ago I was doing general preventive maintenance, grease the chassis and drive train type stuff, when I happen to look up from ch cling my rear diff fluid and notice that my base leaf spring is not in line with the rest of the spring pack. Upon further investigation I find that I have one broken u-bolt with the other 3 not far behind.

So, I gathered up the tools o would need to do this simple fix, i.e. cordless impact, torque wrench, extra deep well socket, jack and stands l, etc., and get to work pulling these things off to have new ones made. The first but I start on with the cordless comes off fairly easy enough but the second one is froze on tight, won’t budge with the impact. I brake out my cheater bar and start to apply pressure and damn near ended up with a face full of tire, the damn u-bolt broke. This was how the rest of them went as well. Soooooo after about 30 min of cussing and muscling I have all four bolts off and I’m down the road to the local truck shop to have new ones made.

I get back to my pickup, loosely attach new u-bolts, and begin to straighten the springs to where they are all uniform up and down. Once that is done I zip the nits down tight and then use the torque wrench to make sure they bare tightens to the proper torque. I must say, putting the damn things on is a hell of a lot easier than taking the old rusted ones off.

Total Cost: $89
