Petit LeMans 2017
So this weekend my 16 year old S8 and I went on a little road trip. Road Atlanta is located in Braselton, GA and is about 500 miles from my home in Pass Christian on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. One of my intentions when I refurbished my car was to use it for Audi racing events and Audi Club gatherings, so Petit was a logical destination, as were Daytona for the Rolex 24 in January and Sebring for the 12 Hours in March.
The drive up was without incident, with stops only for gas and lunch. The car is a beast on the road and the original Recaros make swallowing huge chunks of mileage as easy as sitting in an easy chair. So a great drive up and it was so nice to see all my "go to the races" buddies there.
On Friday afternoon in between the practice sessions the AudiSport Experience participants (like me) got out onto the track for a few "parade" laps. While we were nowhere near competitive speeds, the pace car gave us enough room so that we could stretch our car's legs. In addition, earlier that morning I was treated to 2 "hot laps" with a professional driver at the wheel of one of Audi's new RS3 models. That little car is fun and is very quick.
I've uploaded 2 photos. One is a shot of my S8 on the parade lap at Sebring this past March, as the Road Atlanta photos aren't up online yet. The other is a shot of the class winning Audi R8 LMS #29 car campaigned by Land Motorsports.
This morning (right after I finish typing this), I'll begin my drive back home taking a slightly different route than I did to come up. Hurricane Nate is in my way, so I'll drive straight south picking up I-10 around Tallahasee and then head west to Pass Christian.
I've owned this car for almost 10 years now, and I still enjoy driving it on long distance runs. 2018 will take us to Daytona and Sebring in the first quarter of the year, Quattro de Mayo in May, and probably up to Elkhart Lake in Wisconsin for the Road America IMSA race in August. If we do go to Elkhart, then it's only a short 2000 mile drive west to the Audi Club's National Event in Seattle the next weekend.
Got to go...the road beckons and home is only about 600 miles away with my hurricane detour. Should be there mid afternoon.
