The Monster Transmission has been Tamed...

For those that didn't read my other Monster Transmission post. The summary is that I purchased a new Monster 700R4 SS Mega Monster Corvette transmission and a lockup Torque Converter. I had them both professionally installed as part of a major performance upgrade to Silverback. Unfortunately, the trans had a serious 2nd to 3rd shift issue. I took the car back and the shop pulled the trans, recrated it and shipped it back to Monster for warranty repairs. Now you're caught up with the other post.

The rest of the story...

After waiting about 5 weeks for the transmission to be shipped up to Monster, repaired, shipped back, reinstalled. It was time for the test drive. First, it's important to note that my shop spoke to Monster and they told him the transmission was dyno tested and road tested. Not sure how they did the road test without some sort of test mule. Anyway, our actual road test in Silverback showed EXACTLY the same problem.

So, as you'd probably expect, there was a lot of cussing and ranting, but we needed a plan. Do we repeat the whole thing all over again and wait another 5 weeks? As it turns out my shop knows a guy (yes every good story starts that way), who works at a well known transmission shop, but also builds race transmissions on the side. He rode in the car and quickly determined the clutch scrubbing was from poor clutches. He offered to fix it for us and substantially strengthen the transmission in the process. Of course, this would void the warranty as I was told by my shop. My comment was "what warranty, like that did me a lot of good". So the trans was removed and delivered to him. It came back 2 days later and reinstalled in my car. The test drive was excellent. It had great shifts in all 3 points. The 1st to 2nd slammed you in your seat and the 2nd to 3rd was very solid. So, problem fixed.

The best part... The guy did the work for the cost of the parts because he felt bad for me and the shop doing my work. The shop doing my work paid for the parts under their guarantee to me. So, no cost to me at all to get all this done. While it's the right result, I wasn't expecting it go that way, so I was very happy. My head mechanic Jeremiah Surratt is top notch and not just in his technical expertise but also how he treats his customers.

I don't know if all Monster transmissions suffer from this or I just had an unusually bad experience. Be aware if you plan to order the same unit...

Total Cost: $0
