Phase 1: The Fuel System - Fuel Tank Repair
It's been about two months since I have taken on the fuel system repair. When I got the Jeep, I found the fuel tank punctured. Looks like someone took a knife to the bottom of it and siphoned the fuel out of it. So instead of replacing a $400 fuel tank, I went the route of patching it up. At first I used a hard bonding agent but it didn't hold. Fuel seeped right through it.
I decided to purchase a Plastic Bonder by JB weld. Then I decided to add an extra layer of protection by using a rubberized coating. Expecting the rubber and plastic bonding agents to create a water tight seal. As expected it didn't work the first time...(you thought I was going to say it worked ;))
So, after...I sanded the crap out of the damaged area. Used a Dremel to clean up the frayed area. Then re-did the JB Weld bonding, but this time I took a razor blade and opened the puncture so JB Weld would get inside of the crack. Applying enough to fill the crack inside and out. This time...It seemed to work.
Now I have cleaned the fuel tank up to look brand new and I'm ready for the next phase.
