Engine upgrades in progress...
When I picked up this car last year, the PO has done a "built" 454. What I was told was done was a .030" bored over, big block 454, built by a engine builder in OK. When I got the car home and after I did the minimum to get the car drivable it was pretty clear that the "built" big block didn't have much power for what was done to it. Also, I have had what I believe to be a serious issue with Vapor Lock in the heat of the Austin Summer. So insufficient power and unreliable on the road, not a happy place to be. So I turned it over to Jeremiah at Muscle Cars of Austin and he's been doing a pretty major engine upgrade. I'll try to list the major changes and what we found along the way. He's not done with the engine work but today we fired it up for the first time and so it's alive!
What I know about the engine as I received it:
454 bored .030 over, not the original motor. Casting number says it’s from a truck.
Eagle Crankshaft and Rods
Speed Pro Pistons
Compcam Magnum 280 Hydraulic Roller Cam
Original cast iron heads, also from the truck motor so not nicely ported…
Edelbrock Torker II single plane intake
Holley 750cfm DP454 bored .030 over
Original belts/pulleys with AC/PS
What we're doing to it:
Kept the short block, crank, cam, pistons, rods.
Aluminum Edelbrock Performer RPM heads
Edelbrock Performer RPM dual plane intake
Edelbrock E-Street 2 TB Fuel Injection with new electric fuel pump and return system.
MSD distributor, Digital 6AL ignition controller, and coil.
Eddie Motorsports show polished serpentine belt system with all polished accessories
Complete engine bay rewire to hid the wiring as much as possible
A number of other things to dress up the engine bay that I won't bother mentioning
I had already changed out the exhaust to Hooker chrome long tube side exhausts.
It's not done yet, but a few pic to show you where we started and where it stands now. More to do but after a successful fire up today, I'm pretty psyched about getting it done so we can get it on dyno and see where we landed. Any guess on the wheel HP?
First pics are how the engine bay looked when I handed it off to Jeremiah. Looked ok, but needed some performance and looks improvements. Next two pics are in process pics. Last two pics are where it was today before we fired it up. Still more to do to finish some updates but it's getting there...
